Preparing for a Newborn Session

Preparing for a Newborn Session

Congratulations on your new baby! Thank you so much for allowing me the amazing and rewarding job of photographing your new little mini in his/her first few days of life. Newborns are my passion and I consider myself truly blessed to be around these little miracles so much.

What to Expect...

Baby Prep

Before the shoot, please feed baby 2-3 hours prior, and plan on feeding him/her as soon as you get there! Also, please do not let him/her sleep beforehand, instead try giving hem a bath, let hem kick with only a diaper, tickle their toes, and even let him/her fuss for a little bit (no pacifiers) for the few hours beforehand. This will ensure we capture those squishy, sleepy newborn pictures!

I can’t stress that it’s so important to do your best to keep your baby awake.

Many parents come in saying “baby has been sleeping all morning, but trust me, he sleeps SO good this time of day!” only to have baby wake up, since they will be unclothed and unswaddled!

It will be at least 75 degrees in the studio. Due to this, I come dressed for a warm few hours and suggest you do too!

Sessions last between 2-3 hours, sometimes longer if baby is a light sleeper, or is hungry! The easiest way to ensure a sleepy baby is the willingness to nurse/bottlefeed off and on.

If you can, bring the soothie pacifier the hospital sent you home with. It’s the bendable, green/blue/orangish one, and won’t leave marks. Even if you haven’t used one, just for the 2 hours that I’m posing him/her usually really helps.

If you don’t happen to have one, I keep unopened soothies here in the studio
(as well as plenty of newborn diapers). However if you really prefer that we don’t use one, that’s fine as well!

MOM & DAD Prep

Mom & Dad you are a big part of the show. Photographing the connection between you and your baby is one of my all time favorite things. Neurtral colored clothing is the most flattering and keeps the attention on your faces and baby. You are also more than welcome to do skin to skin images.

Dads: I ask that you bring a tight fitting v-neck t-shirt to wear with a good, snug pair of jeans. If you choose to do skin to skin images, we’ll just remove your t-shirt.

Moms: I have a variety of loose-fitting tank tops here in the studio, but you’re welcome to bring your own as well. Keep any wardrobe selection neutral and design simple. Be sure that you have no bright nail polish as your hands will make their way into the images. Also, rest assured, I aim to photograph using flattering angles and light to bring out the natural beauty in your family.

SILBINGS Prep

Including older brother/sister(s) in your newborn’s portraits is the perfect way to document this fleeting time in your lives Sister(s) I provide a wrap that will act as the perfect top, or please bring along a snug fitting tank in a neutral color or a simplistic, neutral colored dress. I ask that girls hair be natural (or in braids) and free of bright colored bows, headbands, etc Just as with mom, no nail polish please Brother(s) A snug pair of jeans and shirtless are preferred, please take a few moments to chat with your guy about this so he feels prepared for the session – though if he or you prefers not, a tight-fitting white t-shirt is perfectly fine

A Few Additional Thoughts...

If siblings will be joining you for the session I have a TV with Netflix, books, and a chalk board wall as well as snacks and juice boxes on hand. Feel free to bring a favorite toy or two to help them pass the time! It is my hope that you come to the studio feeling comfortable and at home. I am truly honored to be able to document this incredible time in your lives and look forward to getting to know you and your sweet baby!
